Today, May 4, 2015, marks the one year anniversary of our book launch for Folly Beach Dances!
The morning of April 20, I opened my email to find a lovely message about our ‘healing’ coffee table book, FOLLY BEACH DANCES –
“Congratulations! Your title has won the da Vinci Eye for the current Eric Hoffer Award season. The da Vinci Eye is given in honor of the Leonardo da Vinci and awarded to superior book covers artwork each year. This is a special distinction beneath the Eric Hoffer Award umbrella. (Your book is still being considered for category, press, and grand prizes.)”
Needless to say, I was overjoyed. I shared the news with my hubby, Russell Nielsen, who collaborated on this book, as well as my book designer Kristina Blank Makansi, who came up with the gorgeous font and design to showcase the photo I took of a Folly Beach dock near the ‘washout’ shortly after the tropical storm a few years ago.
The book would not have been possible without contributions from my writer colleagues and friends –
Marcia Gaye, Mary Horner, Patt Hollinger-Pickett, Tina Solomon, Pat Wahler, Russell Nielsen, and Debbie Kersting
And endorsements by the following friends, best-selling authors, photographers, media people, business owners –
Karen White, Sandra Carrington-Smith, Tracy Hoobyar, Max Gersh, Dianna Graveman, Craig Burhart, Deborah Marshall, and Joe Palazzolo
Thank you all so much! You made this book real! And for a debut book, in the words of Kristy Makansi, “We done good.”
We will be receiving a gold medal in the mail, and gold ‘winner’ seals will be available for the book.
Happy to announce Folly Beach Dances has been nominated for the Eric Hoffer Award, and is a da Vinci Eye Award finalist.
So grateful!
Doing a happy dance!

In honor of #TBT, here’s a pic of Sheree as a little girl. The boy in the photo apparently liked her.
Also, check out our upcoming events in March at the Preservation Society of Charleston, and the 15-author event at the Irmo Branch Library, in Columbia.
We had a great booksigning at 6 North Cafe Saturday, February 7, 2015 with repeat customers such as Phyllis purchasing copies of FOLLY BEACH DANCES, along with new fans.
One reader, Kelley, stopped by with her book for autographs. She heard Folly Beach Dances through the St. Louis Post Dispatch article “What’s Cooking” article in September where Sheree spoke about lymphoma foods that heal.
In March, we’re headed back to Charleston for a second Preservation Society of Charleston event on March 4, and then on to Columbia, South Carolina, for a 15 author event on March 7 at Irmo Branch Library. Check out our events page for details!
In the meantime,
Remember to dance!
My book buyer from the South Carolina Aquarium Gift Shop emailed me a couple photos the staff at the gift shop snapped of FOLLY BEACH DANCES, our ‘healing’ coffee table book, on display.
The books look lovely next to the Charleston-based gifts, don’t they?
When you visit the aquarium, stop by the gift shop to pick up a copy. It would make a great Valentine’s Day gift for a loved one. We’re also at Blue Bicycle Shop in Charleston, and Indigo Bookstore in St. John’s Island.
On a separate note, our last booksigning of the year was December 20, at 6 North Cafe, Ballwin, Missouri. Author James Lenham dropped by for a visit. What a nice guy!
We’ll be heading back to South Carolina in March for more booksignings. Check out our events page for specific dates. Can’t wait to be in Low Country again!
On December 9, I donated two copies of FOLLY BEACH DANCES, our ‘healing’ coffee table book – one via USPS, the other in person.
The first book went to Joan Lunden. She’s been through quite an ordeal with her breast cancer treatments and just completed her last round of Adramycin and Cytoxan on December 5. I felt strongly about mailing her a copy of FOLLY BEACH DANCES, and popped a book in the mail.
I presented the second book to Mizzou Cancer Care Veterinary Clinic in Wentzville that treats animals with all types of cancer. I hope the animal lovers that wait patiently in their lobby will enjoy the lyrical photography and poetry. Maybe it will take their mind off their sick fur babies receiving treatment.
When I arrived home that day, I spoke to Anna at Pitt Street Pharmacy, who placed an order for 6 more books. Then a reader from Utah ordered several books off the website, and someone from California gifted a book for a friend on Amazon.
God sure works in mysterious ways! If I can share my positivity and mission of self-care with others, that makes me happy.
Remember to Dance,
Sheree K. Nielsen
